I am trying to save money but would like to be able to record some programs. We only have one TV in the house.. with 3 kids and a wife.. you know I am the loser.

Anyway, with a regular old Tivo machine, do you have to have the monthly service? I would like to just buy some little contraption and be able to record stuff.

Thanks for your help.

I would check with your cable/dish provider. Every time I've moved the cable company has given me one "free" with digital cable. You just have to pay 5 dollars a month to rent their box. If you purchase your own box I believe there is a monthly charge plus you have to purchase your own box which starts at around $200 for a Tivo. You could always buy a card and use your computer as a DVR as well.
